Sploofs 101: How To Reduce Smell When Smoking Cannabis

We’re celebrating a recent victory in our community. The tides of cannabis legalization in the United States. According to a recent poll by CBS News, a whopping two-thirds of Americans now support the idea of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana at both the federal level and in their own states!

We love that so many more people are welcoming and enjoying our favorite herb. But one concern remains prevalent – the unmistakable smell of cannabis smoke. But we have a solution for you: the sploof.

This ultimate guide to sploofing will explore everything you need to know and more about them. But before we divide into our tried and tested methods for constructing your own sploof, we’ll demystify just what they are and their origins for you.

sploof

WHAT IS A SPLOOF?

A sploof is like a muffler for your cannabis. We all know that nothing quite smells like marijuana. It’s like an old car you can hear a mile away without a muffler on its engine.

A sploof is a personal air filter that quietens down the terpenes that have that distinctive cannabis smell. It keeps you and the people around you happy. Instead of stuffing a towel under your door, try using a sploof and elevate your cannabis usage.

The basic concept is very simple; after taking a hit from your joint, pipe, vaporizer, or bong you exhale into the sploof. As the smoke travels through a filtering system, the odorous particles are trapped and absorbed. The remaining smoke should smell significantly less potent.

Before the smoke even enters the surroundings and has a chance to be detected, it is purified.

The beauty of a sploof lies in its DIY nature. Crafty smokers, like yourself, can very easily put together one in the blink of an eye. Because of this, it is entirely customizable depending on your budget and the level of odor reduction you’re after.

It also adds a degree of ownership and creativity to your smoking routine and lifestyle.

One quick thing before going any further though, sploofs are far more efficient when smoking cannabis with a bong or vaporizer. The sploof won’t catch and filter the additional trails of smoke from a blunt or joint. But hey, choose your own adventure.

We aren’t here to judge.

The Origin Of “Sploof”

In true cannabis fashion, the name “sploof” is simultaneously enigmatic and straightforward. The term sounds whimsical and fun but is actually rooted in the culture of marijuana. It most probably comes from some of the creative minds of our community.

The exact historical origin of the name is unclear but the name was most likely coined by the cannabis community in the 20th century. “Sploof” became popular through word-of-mouth by smokers who were looking for discreet ways to indulge without its unmistakable scent.

One theory is that “sploof” is simply a play on the word “spoof”. A spoof is a light and good-humored parody or a hoax. In this case, the spoof is that people can’t smell the cannabis smoke and won’t know about your most recent indulgence.

Another theory builds on this and goes that the term is an amalgamation of the term “spliff” and “spoof”. A spliff is another age-old cannabis creation and consists of a combination of marijuana and tobacco rolled together into a joint, blunt, or cigarette.

Whatever the exact etymology is, the term has stuck around long enough to become a house classic known across the world by cannabis enthusiasts. So while you build your own sploof, know that you are honoring an established tradition of the vibrant and ever-evolving perpetually culture of cannabis!

How Effective Are Sploofs?

Not all sploofs are created equal. Some sploofs are better than others. And the choice is entirely yours.

The most long-lasting sploofs will always be commercially made and if DIY is not for you then buying one will always be easier.

However, our DIY options make a close second and can be equally as effective. Plus, they are remarkably easy to make. The efficacy of your sploof will depend heavily on your choice of materials.

Most importantly, your choice of filtering system will greatly impact the mileage you can get out of sploof. The most widely used filters are dryer sheets packed into empty toilet paper tubes. They are more affordable than the other options but will only last you 2-3 smoking sessions.

You know when they need to be replaced when they start to turn yellowish brown.

Activated charcoal will last longer than dryer sheets but it is a heavier material. So if you’re going to use it, you’ll need to use a sturdier frame than an empty toilet paper tube as the cardboard might not be able to hold the weight.

Not only that, but in order to activate charcoal you will need to boil it for 10-15 minutes. And we’re sure you can imagine the problems that might arise from packing wet charcoal into cardboard.

Whichever choice you make will be leaps and bounds better than smoking without a filter. But just keep in mind that your mileage may vary (YMMV) according to the choices you make.

HOW TO MAKE A SPLOOF?

Fundamentally, a sploof is just a cylinder filled with some sort of filter, one open end where you blow into and one covered porous end. Yes, it really is that simple. But, the age-old design has many iterations reaching across budgets and accessibility.

The most popular options for containers are a cardboard toilet paper tube or a plastic bottle. The classic cardboard toilet paper tube is less durable than plastic but it is, of course, very easy to replace. You probably have multiple in your house at this very instant.

A sploof made with a plastic bottle will last exponentially longer and be more durable. But it does require a little bit more crafting.

If these options don’t work for you, then any tube with two ends can be converted into a sploof. For something more heavy-duty, feel free to try a used chapstick tube or even a PVC pipe. The sky’s the limit.

Whichever container you decide to go with will need to be filled with a filtering system. The most widely used options are dryer sheets and activated charcoal.

Dryer Sheets Vs Activated Charcoal

Deciding which direction to go can be difficult so let us give you some pointers.

Dryer sheets are more readily available and affordable than charcoal. But they need to be replaced more often than charcoal.

If you need a filter fast and with no hassle or if you only smoke occasionally, consider the classic sploof made out of a toilet paper tube and dryer sheets. However, if you are a more frequent smoker and want to invest more in a longer-lasting filter then using activated charcoal would be your best option.

The methods listed here are by no means an exhaustive list of all the possible iterations of a sploof. Feel free to adjust these methods to your own liking and switch out parts from different versions.

Without further ado, here are our favorite three methods for making a sploof:

Method 1: The Classic Toilet Paper Tube Sploof

You probably won’t even need to leave your house for the simplest and most popular design. Here’s how you’ll create this one:

You will need:

  • A cardboard cylinder (like a toilet paper roll)
  • 4-5 dryer sheets
  • An elastic band, a length of string, tape, or a tie
  • A pair of scissors (or another sharp object)

Steps:

  1. Cover one end of the cylinder with a dryer sheet and secure it with your elastic band, string, tape, or tie.
  2. If you take pride in your paraphernalia as we do, trim the excess paper for a more uniform aesthetic.
  3. Loosely pack the rest of the dryer sheets into the roll
  4. Exhale your marijuana smoke through the open end of the toilet roll and the dryer sheets will absorb the smell.

Method 2: The Activated Carbon Sploof

This more advanced sploof uses activated charcoal, which is known as a powerful filter of a wide variety of substances including odors. We know it sounds difficult to find but it’s actually available at most pet stores for aquarium filters. Here’s how you’ll create this one:

You will need:

  • A plastic bottle (any size will do)
  • Activated charcoal
  • A pair of scissors (or any other sharp object)
  • A length of string, tape, or a tie
  • 4-5 dryer sheets

Steps:

  1. Cut off the bottom of the plastic bottle at approximately the halfway mark. Discard or recycle the bottom of the bottle. Or use it in your next crafting session. Get creative.
  2. Make a few holes in the bottle’s cap for your exhales.
  3. Loosely add two sheets of dryer paper into the bottle.
  4. Activate your charcoal by boiling it in water for 10-15 minutes.
  5. Add two tablespoons of activated charcoal. Don’t add too much charcoal because it may become too heavy for the bottle or dryer sheets.
  6. Loosely add two more dryer sheets to cover the charcoal.
  7. Cover the open, bottom end of the bottle with a single dryer sheet and secure it with string, tape, or a tie. We found using an elastic band here didn’t work because the plastic can fold from the tension. While this doesn’t compromise the integrity of the sploof, it is likely to fall off in the middle of your session. Definitely not what we want.
  8. Exhale your marijuana smoke into the neck of the bottle through the cap which you perforated and let the activated charcoal work its magic.

Method 3: The Fragranced Paper Towel Sploof

If you cannot get access to either dryer sheets or activated charcoal we have got your back. Here’s what you’re going to do:

You will need:

  • A cardboard tube (a finished toilet paper tube)
  • 1-2 paper towels
  • Air freshener or fragrance
  • An elastic band, a length of string, tape, or a tie
  • A sharp object

Steps:

  1. Spray your paper towels with air freshener or your fragrance. Don’t overdo the fragrance – you still need to put them to your mouth.
  2. Cover one end of the cylinder with one of the paper towels and secure it with your elastic band, string, tape, or tie.
  3. Just like our dryer sheet method, trim the excess paper for a more uniform aesthetic.
  4. Loosely stuff the other paper towel into the roll.
  5. Exhale your marijuana smoke through the open end of the toilet roll and the fragranced paper towel will absorb the smell.

No matter which method you choose, follow the steps listed above and you’ll be celebrating how easy it is to make a sploof in no time!

Adjusting Your Sploof

The aspect of sploofs that we enjoy the most is their versatility. Whether you prefer vaping, cannabis concentrate, or just have specific preferences, we have some recommendations for your design.

If you prefer vaping your cannabis, you’ll know it produces less vapor or smoke than traditional smoke. We recommend scaling down on size and creating a more compact filtering system.

For cannabis concentrates that produce denser vapor though, it’s a good idea to switch to a more robust filtering agent. Go for more activated charcoal over dryer sheets or scented paper towels.

If discretion is of utmost importance, you can try to get creative with decorating your sploof and disguising it to look like other household items. Hopefully, it’ll blend into the surroundings and no one will be any the wiser.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SPLOOFS

While more and more cannabis smokers are using sploofs, they are surrounded by myths and misconceptions. We’ll explore a few common ones here and debunk them once and for all.

Sploofs Will Completely Remove The Smell Of Marijuana

The first and most prevalent myth is that a sploof will entirely get rid of the smell of marijuana smoke. As much as we can highly recommend them, they do not entirely eradicate the smell.

Your best bet is to combine a sploof with other precautionary techniques like storing your weed in air-tight containers or smoking in a well-ventilated area.

The Filtering System Is Detrimental To Your Health

Another misconception is that using a sploof is bad for your health because of the dryer sheets and activated charcoal used to make them. We want to assure you that there is little cause for alarm.

The relatively minuscule amount of smoke passing through the filtering agents is not enough to cause any health problems. That being said, please do use your sploof with caution and avoid inhaling through it. This is not what they were designed for.

Commercial Sploofs Are Better Than DIY Versions

Many sources on the internet will tell you that commercial sploofs are more effective than DIY ones. And yes, a commercial sploof will last longer than a handmade one and it can offer a sleek, convenient design.

But if you follow our instructions and create a well-crafted sploof, it can be just as effective at filtering smoke as any commercial sploof. And it is more affordable and entirely customizable!

Sploofs Are Only Useful For Smoking Cannabis

Some people believe that sploofs are only suitable for smoking cannabis. But those people would be wrong. With a few adjustments to the mouthpiece and the filtering agents, a sploof can be used to filter smoke from vaping or even tobacco.

Experienced Smokers Do Not Use Sploofs

Finally, you might think that sploofs are only for cannabis newbies but we, at Embarc, are here to let you know that sploofs are for everyone.

Yes, they are great for smokers who want to avoid getting detected. But experienced cannabis smokers also appreciate the social consideration that a sploof can offer to nonsmokers and in shared living spaces.
