What Is A Gravity Bong And How Do You Make One?

Are you getting a bit bored with your cannabis smoking routine? Looking for a more powerful high?

A gravity bong is a fantastic way to stretch your stash of weed and get creative with items you likely already have at home.

Read on to discover what a gravity bong is, its benefits and drawbacks, and how to make your own!

WHAT IS A GRAVITY BONG?

As the name suggests, a gravity bong uses the power of gravity to propel bong smoke into your lungs.

You may have heard its other names: geeb, grav bong, gravity pipe. All of these refer to the same cannabis consumption method.

A gravity bong, although a bong in its own right, requires less effort on your part while producing a “higher” result. This method uses two empty plastic bottles or containers to funnel smoke through water. This smoke is then pushed into the user’s lungs, without much inhaling necessary.

Let’s take a deep dive into how to build a DIY gravity bong.

HOW TO MAKE A GRAVITY BONG

For the experienced smoker, making a gravity bong is simple and fun, especially if you’re a crafty person. If you’re not so crafty, you have the option to buy a gravity bong at a dispensary.

It’s also a great alternative to your other smoking methods if you’re in the mood for novelty.

Supplies Needed:

  • 1x plastic bottle with a cap. This can be a 2L bottle or smaller.
  • 1x water/milk jug, bucket, or large container. Any container that is larger and wider than your plastic bottle will do. For example, if your first plastic bottle is smaller than 2L, you can use a 2L bottle as your larger container. Alternatively, you could use a coffee pot, pitcher, or even a plugged sink if you want to avoid cutting.
  • Aluminum foil
  • Box cutter, sharp knife, or scissors
  • Poking device or hole-punching tool (sharpened pencil, toothpick, etc.)
  • Water
  • Lighter, matches, or soldering iron
  • At least 1g of your favorite ganja strain

Step 1: Cut Bottles And Fill With Water

Start with your smaller bottle.

Measure a quarter to halfway up from the base of your bottle. Use your cutting tool to cut off the bottom part. Slice all the way around.

Bear in mind that this bottle will hold the smoke. The more of the bottle that remains, the larger your hit will be. So, be careful not to trim off too much!

Now for the larger container. Measure a quarter or halfway down from the top of the container this time. Slice all the way around to cut the top off.

Fill the larger container halfway up with water. Any type of water will do. You’re not going to be drinking it!

Step 2: Make A Hole In The Bottle Cap

Next, you need to make the bowl of your bong.

Take the bottle cap from your smaller container. Next, use your hole-punching tool to drill a hole through the center of the cap. You’ll need to do a bit of a twist to create the hole.

The next step is to widen the cap to about the size of your pinky finger. Use your sharp cutting tool to twist some more and widen the hole.

Hint: A larger hole will give you a sweet, quick draw but it will also use up your pot faster.

Step 3: Tear And Shape The Aluminium Foil

Rip off a square piece of your aluminum foil. Make the square large enough to cover the cap, with a little extra on all sides for folding over the cap.

Hold your pinky finger in the center of the foil. Carefully wrap the foil upwards and around your finger. This will form the bowl that you’ll insert through the hole you’ve made in your bottle cap.

See why the hole needed to be pinky-sized?

Step 4: Place Foil Inside The Cap

Push your homemade bowl through the hole in the bottle cap from the top side.

Fold the stuck-up ends of the foil down and smooth them against the bottle cap. Maintain the dent you made with your pinky finger in the foil where you inserted it through the hole you made in the cap.

Step 5: Poke Holes In The Foil

Use your sharp pencil or toothpick to poke four to six holes in the foil on the bottle cap. This will let enough smoke through.

Be mindful that your foil doesn’t break! If it does, you’re going to place your precious Mary Jane in the bowl just to let it fall through into the waters below.

Step 6: Load The Bowl

Now, for the best part – getting to the actual smoking.

Place your weed inside the foil indentation that you made in the cap (now your bowl).

If you notice your weed is falling through the holes in the bowl, you’ll need to build a new tin foil bowl with smaller holes.

Don’t worry, though. As your fellow puffer, Thomas the Tank Engine (and his friends) sang, “If at first, you don’t succeed, try and try again!

Step 7: Place The Smaller Bottle In The Water

Place the top part of the smaller bottle you cut earlier in the water in the larger container (bottle top facing upward). You may need to maintain your grip on the bottle if it doesn’t fit perfectly into the larger container.

Ensure you do this before placing the cap on the bottle. When you place the smaller bottle into the larger container, it creates pressure. If your cap is already on the bottle, this pressure will propel your ganja out of its resting place.

Once your smaller bottle is in the water, you can carefully screw your weed-filled bottle cap onto it.

Step 8: Light It Up!

Grab your lighter and hold the bottle down as you light up your bowl. As you light it, slowly pull the bottle upwards with your free hand.

Milky smoke should fill the bottle. Make sure you don’t pull the bottle fully out of the water, as this will release the smoke.

Step 9: Unscrew And Smoke

Place your lighter down once the bottle is filled with smoke. Hold your contraption steady as you unscrew the cap.

Place your lips around the bottle and slowly push the bottle down into the water. Let gravity work its magic as the bottle fills with water and smoke fills your lungs. Don’t force it! Breathe in gently and let science do the work.

THE BENEFITS OF USING A GRAVITY BONG

Fun, isn’t it? A gravity bong gives you a unique experience if you’re growing bored of your usual smoking methods.

Using a gravity bong to smoke your pot is fast, efficient, and gives you an instant, powerful high.

The high is much stronger than when using other methods because the water pressure forces heavily concentrated smoke into your lungs. They’re filled, way beyond an average hit from a pipe or joint. You’re smoking an entire bowl of cannabis at once, remember?

How long will this particular high last though? The intensity of this high does affect its length. The more you smoke, the longer the effects will last. Generally, a gravity bong will give you anywhere between one to three hours of a good high, depending on your tolerance.

TIPS FOR USING A GRAVITY BONG

Due to the power of the gravity bong high, the intense hit of THC may be too much for the inexperienced smoker. Proceed with caution if you’re a novice!

Don’t, under any circumstances, force yourself to inhale too much smoke. Even veteran stoners may cough their lungs out if they force it.

There’s no need to change the bowl foil between every smoke session. Just be mindful of potential tears and clogging. If you notice your foil is torn or clogged, swap it out for a fresh piece.

POTENTIAL RISKS OF USING A GRAVITY BONG

As with any other consumption method of good ol’ Mary Jane, there are potential risks and drawbacks.

Gravity bongs are generally made from single-use plastic. More research does need to be conducted in this area. But presently, we know that heating the bottles can release chemicals that could be harmful to inhale, like polyethylene terephthalate or PET.

And, naturally, the dreaded weed hangover could occur if you don’t look after yourself. A high dosage all at once may increase the chances of this happening. So, drink plenty of water and don’t mix it with any other substances, such as alcohol.

HOW TO CLEAN A GRAVITY BONG

Bongs, pipes, and other smoking apparatus can get pretty filthy after a while. But maintaining a good level of cleanliness is easy.

First, disassemble. Separate your bowl and two bottles. Next, give them all a good rinse with warm water.

After rinsing, use a toothbrush to scrub in all the nooks and crannies where gunk tends to accumulate. Then rinse all the parts again with another dose of warm water.

To sterilize, boil the various parts in water for approximately 10 minutes. Let them cool and dry before reassembly. And that’s that! Your gravity bong is clean and you’re sorted for your next smoke session.

ALTERNATIVES TO A GRAVITY BONG

As a health precaution, some smokers prefer using glass or silicone devices rather than plastic. You can buy a silicone or glass bong from your local smoke store or online.

Another version of the gravity bong is the waterfall bong. Both use air pressure to draw the smoke into the bong.

While a gravity bong creates a vacuum when raising your bottle out of the water, a waterfall bong is slightly different. The air pressure change is caused by the displacement of water out of the waterfall bong’s opening. This draws smoke into the smoke compartment.

When all the water has receded, your next step is to cover the opening out of which the water flowed with your finger. Finally, inhale deeply.

By now, we’re sure you’re chomping at the bit for an intense high that will knock your socks off. It’s time to put your knowledge to use and impress your buddies with your brand-new DIY gravity bong!
